** Lemon juice can also be used as a toner. For toning, use diluted lemon juice on your face and rinse after about 15 mins.

Although my guess is that a very small amount (for example, 1/4 of a teaspoon) in a full 8-ounce glass of water might not have enough acidity to pose a significant risk.

Simple version (fewer ingredients):
3 stalks of celery or 1 head of lettuce (e.g. romaine)

1-2 apples or pears
1 lemon (not peeled)

Optional ingredients – use what you like or have in your kitchen:

1 cucumber
1/4 to 1/2 ripe papaya (1/2 makes the juice sweeter)

1 cup of fennel (stalk can be used too)
1 beet

And what does it mean, anyway?

It’s truly simple.

Natural, unprocessed, plant-based diet is best for both your skin and the rest of your body.

The key appears to be that there is nothing (or at least as close to nothing as you can get ;-) ) refined or processed in your diet, but instead it should be high in fresh vegetables, fruits, greens, fiber and low in sugar. Eat as much raw as you can, or just lightly cooked foods – such as steamed veggies, soups or stews.

Juicing is a great habit to acquire. Raw, live, fresh fruit and vegetables have so many beneficial effects on the body.

Ideally, we should all drink at least one glass of freshly pressed juice every day.

There are so many health benefits to drinking fresh juice it would be impossible to list them all.  

The top three main reasons why juicing is so beneficial, in my opinion, are:

(1) Highly concentrated nutrition.

When you juice, you use more fruits and vegetables than you could actually eat.  So, when you drink the juice form of the fruit and vegetables you are receiving highly concentrated nutrition, which means the amount it would normally take to fill you up wouldn’t have anywhere near as much goodness.

As a result, you are drinking a densely packed amount of vitamins, minerals and other plant-based nutrients.

(2) Easy absorption

The juice requires hardly any digestion, so all its nutritional goodness gets quickly into your system without your body needing to do any work.

(3) Liver detoxification

One the critical functions of the liver is to clean the blood and remove toxins and metabolic waste.  With the amount of toxins we are dealing with everyday in modern life we need to be real diligent in helping to keep it “clean” so it can keep us clean!

Specific nutrients are required to allow the liver do its cleansing job. Antioxidants beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and N-acetyl cysteine are potent liver cleansers. In addition, B-vitamins riboflavin and niacin also aid liver cleansing.  Cabbage, brussel sprouts and cauliflower have been found to be great for the liver.

Benefits of Juicing Vs Blending: Why Juicing May Not Be an Ideal Way To Add More Fruits & Veggies to Your Diet

Benefits of juicing cannot be denied.

Preparing freshly made juices from fruits, veggies and greens is without question a fantastic way to enrich your diet with super-important nutrients that can be absorbed quickly and easily by your body.

However, juicing may or may not be the ideal solution you for at least three reasons.

Why juicing may not be an ideal way To add more fruits and veggies to your diet

(1.) Juice is very concentrated.

* Problem number one with juice is that it’s too concentrated.

* If you add a lot of sweet fruit (such as apricots, mangoes, pears, etc.) and sweet vegetables (such as carrots), the juice will contain lots of sugar. This can be an issue for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes or candida.

* If you’re making green juices from greens such as parsley, kale, etc. – even though they are super healthy – you need to be aware consuming large amounts of them on a regular basis can be mildly toxic and cause some unpleasant side-effects.

So, while drinking a reasonable quantity of vegetable juice every day, such as 8 or 10 ounces is OK, if you go beyond this amount, you may not be doing your body such a huge favor as you may be lead to believe. In case of juicing, more is not always better.

(2.) Juice contains no fiber.

Problem number two with juicing is that you in the process of extracting the fluids you leave discard some very valuable parts of the produce, namely the dietary fiber.

This can be viewed as a benefit in some situations, because if there is no fiber this means the body doesn’t need to do any work digesting the juice, so all the important nutrients are absorbed instantly.

However, the fact is that your body NEEDS fiber for proper digestion and elimination. So, if you are not getting your fiber from the rest of your diet, you are not doing your body a big favor.

Even though fiber is not used by our bodies for nutrition, it plays a vital role in the process of digestion, as it slows down the absorption of nutrients, helps to clean the digestive tracts of toxins and unwanted matter, and improves bowel movement.

(3.) Juice doesn’t satisfy hunger as well as other foods

Fiber also creates the feeling of fullness that satisfies our hunger.

While drinking a a glass of fresh juice is a tasty appetizer, it is not a satisfying meal by itself.

Some people solve this problem by reusing the pulp for baking and other cooking recipes, but most of us just discards these valuable parts of the plants, which is – in my opinion – quite wasteful, not to mention expensive, especially if you buy organic.

(4) Juicing is often time consuming and messy

Depending on which type of juicer you own and how much time during the day you have, this may or may not be an issue for you, but I think this is a problem for a lot of people, including myself.

While I’m certainly not telling you to stop juicing, the fact is you can easily eliminate all three problems by preparing and drinking blended drinks or smoothies.

- Buyer Beware. In choosing nutritional supplements it is truly a caveat emptor—and let the buyer beware. Remember that vitamins, minerals and other supplements aren’t regulated in the same way as prescription drugs. You need to read the ingredients listed as being contained in any product and investigate possible benefits as well as potential side effects than can occur.  Because of the lack of regulations in the vitamin industry and there are many unscrupulous sellers that may try to get your money.

- How do you know which brand to trust? Some vitamins and supplements can be hazardous to your health.  Many vitamins, including some of the highly advertised name brands, are processed at high temperatures, contain petroleum derived chemical solvents, such as ethyl cellulose and are coated with methylene chloride, a carcinogenic material. Even though the majority of people will have no serious side effects from ingesting small amounts of toxins found in some vitamin supplements, the long term consequences of continuous, daily intakes are potentially dangerous, and a small percentage people of displays sensitivity to these chemicals. Allergic reactions may include fatigue, memory loss, depression and insomnia.

- How natural are “natural” vitamins and supplements? Some of the “natural” vitamins are also produced under less than optimal conditions. The potency, dosage – and sometimes even the ingredients – are often difficult to determine from the label. Natural does not always mean a seal of approval.

Juice Fasting For Detoxification: What To Expect When You Start a Juice Detox?


Just the other day I wrote a post about Juicing For Weight Loss: Is It Ever a Good Idea to Juice Fast to Lose Weight Quickly?

Today I want to describe what you should expect when you start a juice fast for detox or weight loss. First of all, if you have been eating the average American diet (and let’s face it – it is FAR from ideal) – like most of us, you should be prepared for some discomfort when you start a juice fast. In fact the side effect can be so strong, that only the most determined individuals are able to stick to the fast longer than a few hours.

However, what you should know, is that it gets easier as you go on, and if you persist you’ll be able to stick with it as long as you’ve intended.

Note: Juice fasting is not really fasting in the strict understanding of the word – and should really be referred to as juice diet. True fasting means consuming nothing but water. However, many people refer to “juice diet” as “juice fasting” – meaning consuming nothing but juice, and that’s what we are talking about here.

REPORTER: What do you experience during your juice cleanse?

ANSWER: Honestly, the first day is HELL! I feel constantly hungry and there is an inner war with one part of me asking, “Why in the world are you doing this? Stop NOW!”. And sometimes I’ve started and then quit. Just eating a salad will alleviate the hunger pangs. I think it’s the act of chewing that makes the difference. I’m not sure that I’m really hungry because I drink as much juice as I want and it does fill up my stomach. Several times I’ve decided to fast, started on the juice and then eaten salads or fruit later in the day and then gradually tapered off on the solid stuff.

At other times I’ve persisted and haven’t eaten anything solid from the very beginning.

My longest fast was five days.

After that first day it gets easier. Much easier. Usually, sometime during the afternoon of the second day I start to feel incredible: euphoric, light, almost floating but in a good way. There’s a real “high” on the other side of the suffering at the beginning. During this time I always regret that we humans have to eat at all. It seems so much easier to just skip the whole eating process – and it would certainly be more pleasurable and save a lot of money and effort.

Green Juice: Juicer Recipe for Energizing Green Vegetable Juice Cocktail


There are many variations of this green juice recipe that you may want to try – almost every book on the subject of diet and nutrition gives some version of this green cocktail.

Green juices are unbelievably good for you, so good, in fact, that we should all be drinking them daily in the morning, instead of the coffee or milk.  They are great immune system boosters.

One fundamental quality of green juice is chlorophyll, which is the product of plants turning light into energy for insects and animals to eat. Without chlorophyll, life as we know it, would not exist.

This is a recipe for a delicious green juice with apples and lemon:

Simple version:
1 head romaine lettuce or celery
5-6 leaves of kale (you can add some other greens too, such as spinach, dandelion, or parsley)
1-2 apples or pears (green apples are less sweet, more tart)
1 lemon (not peeled)

Additional/optional ingredients:
1 cucumber
1 cup of spinach leaves
1/4 to 1/2 ripe Hawaiian papaya (1/2 results in a sweeter juice)
1 handful of cilantro or parsley (or both for deeper green juice)
1 handful of fennel (stalk can be used too)

You may also like to add some beets or carrots, but then of course it will no longer be a green juice. Some people like to add small slice of garlic and/or ginger.

Liver Tonic

Apricot-Mango-Orange Ambrosia: Delicious Recipe For Apricot Juice


This is another juicer recipe that is both good for you and exquisitely tasty. Delicious to drink in the summer time with a little bit of ice.

Apricots and mangoes are great sources of beta-carotenes, while oranges are a rich source of vitamin C and flavonoids.

Watermelon-Grape Delight: Delicious Watermelon Juice Recipe


Don’t throw away that watermelon rind! Watermelon rind is very nutrient rich. It has chlorophyll, vitamin A, protein, potassium, zinc, iodine, nucleic acids and enzymes which aid digestion.

Beet-Carrot-Apple Energizing Vegetable Cocktail Recipe


Beet juice is excellent liver cleanser; beets have been used naturopathically to cleanse and support the liver for many years.

Rich in vitamins and minerals that include beta carotene, zinc, vitamin C, and chromium (from the apple), it is no wonder this drink is especially energizing.

Beet-Carrot-Apple Energizer

Juice Ingredients:
1 golden or red delicious apple, washed
5 medium carrots, scrubbed well, tops removed, ends trimmed
1 small beet with leaves and stems, scrubbed well
1/2 lemon, washed or peeled if not organic
1/2- to 1-inch piece ginger root, washed

Making the juice:
1. Cut the apple and beet into sections to fit your juicer’s feed tube.
2. Juice all ingredients, stir the juice and pour into a glass.
3. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Makes about 14 ounces

Juicer Recipes: Cleansing Carrot Cocktails


If possible, use organic fruits and vegetables in your juicer recipes, but if you cannot find them, or you feel they cost too much – don’t worry and just use what you have.

Vitamin A may also be an aid in helping to prevent certain forms of cancer. The vitamin A from freshly juiced carrots is very important for women who are pregnant. They need to build up and maintain the health of their own body, as well as the new developing child. Even after the baby is born, it is still imperative that fresh carrot juice is kept in the daily diet for the mother nursing the child.

Carrot juice helps nursing mothers to enrich their milk. The chances of developing puerperal sepsis is minimized by the regular intake of carrot juice during pregnancy. If it is taken during the last three months of pregnancy, it tends to reduce the hazard of infection after childbirth. It also meets the demands of calcium during pregnancy. One pound of carrot juice is equal to 20 pounds of calcium tablets as far as the active calcium is concerned.

Another vitamin contained in carrot juice is vitamin E. This vitamin appears in three forms, known chemically as alpha, beta, and gamma tocopherol, and commonly known as the vitamin E complex. In animal experimentation, vitamin E has been found to affect reproduction. When foods bearing this vitamin were fed to animals that had failed to reproduce, their sterility was overcome.

Carrots also carry other vitamins such as B, C, D, E, and K, and minerals like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, and traces of protein. Juicing your carrots will help to promote healthier hair, skin, and nails.

Because of its rich vitamin and mineral content and other valuable nutrients the daily diet should be fortified with the protective and healthful benefits of carrot juice. It can be taken alone, or combined with other fruit and vegetables juices.

Carrot juice is one of the richest sources of vitamin A that can be used in the daily diet. It also ranks high as a source of the other vitamins, especially those of the B complex. Its mineral content is equally rich, and includes calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, and iron.

The carrot is recorded as being used in medicine by the early Greeks and has been cherished ever since. Its juice is one of the most delicious and healthful, and alone or in combinations should be in every daily diet providing, as it does, the essential vitamin A, without the saturated fats with which this vitamin is associated in eggs and butter.
