Lemon juice, as we all know, is acidic. Sometimes the whole problem in acne care is that the skin is not acidic enough for all the other treatments we do to work.

Lemon juice has a pH of around 2.3 Lowering the pH of the skin makes it a lot less comfortable for bacteria. ** After cleansing your face, smear a small slice of lemon on the face (avoid eye area) – or – squeeze a lemon into a clean bowl, dip a cotton ball into the lemon juice and blot fresh lemon juice all over my face.

** You may feel a slight burning sensation, but don’t be alarmed. Normally, anything that causes stinging of the skin is not a good thing. Lemon juice, however, causes a stinging that slows down inflammatory processes, so that the net effect on the skin is positive. Undiluted lemon juice can be especially irritating to sensitive skin. If your skin is very sensitive, try diluting the juice with water.

** Rinse off after 15-20 minutes and moisturize.

** Apply lemon juice topically on acne scar undiluted. Do this twice a day and you will see an improvement on the acne scar. It’s especially effective with new scars.

** Lemon juice can also be used as a toner. For toning, use diluted lemon juice on your face and rinse after about 15 mins.

Drinking juice of half a lemon in a glass of warm water first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day.

Cautions and Side effects

** Lemon juice is a natural remedy and completely safe. There’ll be no adverse effects from harsh chemicals sometimes found in different acne treatment kits. However, some people with sensitive skin may experience redness and irritation in the skin. If this occurs, it is recommended to stop the treatment for a few days. Try applying diluted juice to make it less potent. If redness and irritation continues, it’s best to discontinue treatment indefinitely.

** The effects of lemon juice are intensified by exposure to the UV-A rays of the sun. It’s recommended that you limit or just avoid sun exposure throughout your lemon juice treatment.

** People who have dark brown or black skin should use lemon juice with caution.

** If you have an open wound, do not apply lemon juice to it.

** Lemon juice can damage your tooth enamel if drunk regularly. If you drink it often, use a straw and wash it down with water afterward. Lemon juice has a pH of 2. Human saliva has a pH of 7. In terms of your teeth, a pH of 5.5 and above will cause little or no harm. At 5.5 and below, a liquid will work to strip the protective enamel from your teeth. Although my guess is that a very small amount (for example, 1/4 of a teaspoon) in a full 8-ounce glass of water might not have enough acidity to pose a significant risk.

Here is one example of a recipe for a Green Cocktail that you may want to try and experiment with:

Simple version (fewer ingredients):
3 stalks of celery or 1 head of lettuce (e.g. romaine)
5-6 leaves of kale (or other greens, e.g., 1 cup of spinach)
1-2 apples or pears
1 lemon (not peeled)

Optional ingredients – use what you like or have in your kitchen:

1 cucumber
1/4 to 1/2 ripe papaya (1/2 makes the juice sweeter)
1 handful of cilantro or parsley, or wheatgrass (or both for deeper green juice)
1 cup of fennel (stalk can be used too)
1 beet
2 carrots
a piece of garlic or ginger.

However, even if you do believe that there must me at least some connection into what goes into your body, has strong influence on the largest organ of your body – your skin, the information and advice that is out there is confusing and often conflicting.

Eat healthy – easier said than done, right?!

And what does it mean, anyway?

It’s truly simple.

Natural, unprocessed, plant-based diet is best for both your skin and the rest of your body.

The key appears to be that there is nothing (or at least as close to nothing as you can get ;-) ) refined or processed in your diet, but instead it should be high in fresh vegetables, fruits, greens, fiber and low in sugar. Eat as much raw as you can, or just lightly cooked foods – such as steamed veggies, soups or stews.
