Since I tend to be short on both time and patience when it comes to kitchen technology, centrifugal juicers are my favorite. The bottom line for me is this: if it’s not simple to use, efficient, and easy to clean, chances are I won’t ever really use it.

Some of my favorite things about this juicer include:

Lots of juice: The pulp is still a bit moist, but not soggy as compared with some other machines, so you know you’re not throwing money away. The juice is smooth and very light, not pulpy.

Fast Juicing Performance: The juicer’s dual-speed motor and powerful stainless-steel cutting disc quickly extract the juices from a variety of foods, including soft melon and cucumbers or rind-on pineapple, thick-skinned apples, and carrots. In fact, it can produce 8 ounces of juice from whole apples in just five seconds. You can choose between two speed settings: high speed (12,000 RPMs) for denser fruits and harder vegetables like beets and carrots and low speed (6,500 RPMs) for leafy vegetables and soft fruit, like greens, citrus fruits and melons.

Generous Extra-wide 3-inch feeder chute: I don’t like to spend a lot of time chopping – cucumbers, small apples, beets and other whole veggies easily fit in the feeder tube whole and the dual speed motor gets the job done in seconds. Just place a glass or small pitcher under the spout, insert the desired produce, and gently press down using the included pusher.

It’s really hard to find some serious disadvantages with regards to the Breville JE98XL, but of course, no juicer is perfect. This juicing machine is not that terrific when it comes to juicing leafy greens, such as spinach or wheat grass, or citrus fruits; but this is one weakness that all centrifugal type juicers share. To maximize the juicing performance when juicing greens, roll them up in a ball and push them down the chute with an apple or other juicy fruit.

The bottom line is this: you can spend a ton of money on twin screw juicers and they work great, but the chute is ridiculously small and it’s a pain to push root veggies through. The cleanup takes way too much time for me. Yup, it makes more froth than these slower juicers but it’s fast and easy to clean. Some people criticize these juicers that fast juicing causes too much oxidation – but I just drink my juice right away after I make it so it’s not a big deal for me.

The Cons

Durability. You will find that the Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor is well made for its price, however, it may not be as durable as more expensive juicers. You can find some reviewers complaining that it broke down after a relatively short period of time. The good thing is it comes with a 1 year warranty, so you can get it fixed or replaced if it breaks down in that period of time.

Efficiency. The juicer may not be the most efficient in getting all the juice from the pulp, especially with soft fruits and vegetables. So, even though it’s inexpensive, it may not be the cheapest to operate in the long run if you factor in the cost of produce, because you waste some of it in the process. With hard fruits and vegetables, this juicer is very efficient, producing fine, slightly moist pulp. However, if you are making juice from soft fruit, you will end up with soft, mushy pulp. So for softer stuff like watermelon and spinach leaves, you may prefer to use a blender instead to make it into a smoothie.

Keep in mind that the problem with efficiency is not a problem with this particular model, but a fault with all centrifugal juicers. A masticulating juicer would produce dryer pulp wasting less produce, but would take a lot longer to operate. It takes more time to make a cup of juice with a masticulating (grinding gears) juicer. A citrus juicer makes citrus juice only.

A perfectionist or very frugal person would probably opt for less wet pulp waste by buying a masticulating juicer such as an Omega 8005. A person with a busy lifestyle would probably prefer a fast juicer that is easy to clean like this one. A person who drinks citrus juice a lot would probably buy a citrus juicer. If you are making wheat grass juice, then buy a wheat grass juicer.

Depending on your needs, you may choose to buy a different juicer. However, for the price, it is a great juicer.

One of the most often asked questions I get is “Which is the best juicer to buy?”

Although I addressed this question several times before, I thought it would be more helpful to comparison post about top juicers that you can find in the stores and online.

Naturally, I haven’t tried all the juicers myself, but I’ve read though lots of review pages and here is the result of my research online with actual user reviews included. Hopefully, it will help you decide which is the best juicer for you.

Black Friday and the big holiday shopping time is almost here, and even if it weren’t – a good reason could be always found to buy a new juicer for yourself or someone you love.

Which Is The Best Juicer?

Asking “which juicer should I buy” is a little bit like “which car should I buy” – it all depends on your needs and budget.

Of course, how much money you have to spend is a big factor. However, if you go around and ask people, they will tell you that – as with everything else in life – you get what you pay for.

That is why it’s not worth it to skimp on your juicer. Get the best juicer you can afford. Look at it as an investment that will pay for itself in the long run both in time and in your health. A quality juicer will save you frustration and will last you for many years to come, whereas a cheap machine can break after just a year or two, waste your time, money, not to mention produce.

I’ve included juicers in three price ranges: under 100$, 100-200$ and over $200. If you can go over $500, you can certainly get some great juicers. However, for most people – it’s not an option, and it’s OK too, since you can get some great machines for your money.

I’m also not going to get into the Centrifugal vs Masticating vs Triturating juicer debates. If you have time and are passionate about the subject, read my post that explains the pros and cons of each one.

However, I’m assuming that most people reading this just want an efficient juicer so they can juice quickly and get on with their day.

All the juicer links and prices below are from Amazon, since that’s where I usually shop and that’s where I consistently find the best juicer prices.

Best Juicer for Under 100$

If you are looking for the best best juicer under $100 then Breville BJE200XL 700-Watt Compact Juice Fountain is an excellent option. When you look online, you will find many raving reviews of this juicing machine, so if your budget is limited, this may be the best option for you.

“I juice at least once a day as I primarily eat raw foods. My Jack LaLane juicer finally wore out after 2.5 years of daily use. I was tempted to buy another – but I liked the way everything including the pulp catcher is all in one unit. So glad I got the Breville.

This thing is POWERFUL, especially compared to “Jack LaLanne”. It is so powerful I usually don’t even use the pusher except to cover the top so your ceiling doesn’t get covered with stuff.

The design of this thing is absolutely first rate. Even down to the plug, which has a moulded loop so that it is easy to unplug and plug in! No tool is required to remove the basket, as in most other juicers. Breville uses a combo of ingenious design and magnets to hold it in place! Ease of use and fit and finish is perfect.

Clean up is really a 2 minute operation and I don’t even own a dishwasher. It will stain eventually, as every juicer I have ever owned does. Carrot juice would make a great dye

The pulp on this juicer is a bit wetter than the Jack LaLanne. The “Jack” had a much larger basket and a much slower rotation. I believe that may account for it. But it isn’t much wetter – just very slightly.

This juicer makes much smaller pieces of pulp though – and my experience so far has been that it gets just as much juice from a pound of carrots.

Bottom line – I can’t imagine anyone not loving this unit.

If you look at the list of best juicers under $100 on Amazon, Breville is a clear winner. Just look at the number of buyers and five-star reviews.

The Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor comes second, and it’s still a good buy for the price. It’s not going to juice quite as well as the Breville and probably won’t last as long, but at this price it’s possible choice as well, along with Jack Lalanes’s Power Juicer.

Just keep in mind that with lower price juicers your juicing experience may not be quite as enjoyable, and they will not last as long, plus the smaller feed and lower watt motor will make you work harder.

Best Juicers Between 100-200$

Which is the best juicer in the 100-200$ price range? Breville makes some great juicers, and their Juice Fountain ikon Bje510Xl is certainly at the top of this list. Elegance, stainless steel durability, and satisfied users integrate to make them a exquisite choice.

The 3″ feed tube allows for the easy and efficient processing of whole fruits and vegetables, without pre-cutting, slicing or peeling. It is positioned directly over the center of the cutting disc for better balance and consistent results. The 5 speed settings make the Ikon Juice Fountain the most versatile juice extractor available. The lower speeds are for softer fruits and leafy green vegetables. “As soon as you unpack the Breville you know you have a top quality piece of equipment. It does an outstanding job at juice extraction (the pulp is dryer than what the Waring produced, and the Waring actually did pretty well) and the clean-up is far easier. When cleaning the Waring, you had pulp caked up within the machine itself and it was a pain to clean it out, partially becaused it had a higher moisture content but also simply because of all of the nooks and crannies in this catchment section of the juicer. Although this section detached, it was still difficult to clean nonetheless . The Breville puts the pulp in a separate container off to the side, and as others have mentioned, if you line it with a plastic bag there is nothing to it. The only “pain” is cleaing the filter device, which is going to be difficult with any juicer you buy. The brush they provide does make this a little easier, however.

Now for the biggest difference: the noise produced when the machine is turned on. With the Waring, you had to pause the television, stop talking, cover your ears, and hope the neighbors didn’t phone the cops on you for disturbing the peace. The Breville is FAR quieter. Don’t get me wrong, it is not “whisper quiet” or anything like that, but it probably makes one third of the noise the Waring did.

Is it worth the higher price as compared to the Waring or Hamilton Beach? Hard to say. Like I mentioned, we got the Waring for practically nothing and it was a good introductory machine for us for juicing, but SO LOUD!

I can’t really find any flaws with the Breville at all (we have run it for about a week now). Considering, however, that it costs almost three times what you can get the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro for (I would chose this one over the Waring purely from my experience with it and from reading the reviews for the Hamilton), whether or not you want to go with this “ultra juicer” version boils down to sheer personal preference. How often you will run it and what variety of recipies you might want to put through it should probably be your driving factors, along side the price difference, of course. The main differences I found with the Breville as compared to the Hamilton were a slightly higher wattage (900 versus 800) and the variable speeds instead of only one, single speed. From our perspective, though, we have had no regrets in spending the extra cash for this top model.

EDIT 08/05/08: Just thought I would mention that since this review we bought the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro as a gift for my wife’s mother, so we had a chance to directly compare it to the Breville. It did a good job, but it was louder and not nearly as solidly built as the Breville. After this comparision, we are even more satisfied with our decision to spend a bit extra and get this model. There are several models of Green Star Power Juicer, Green Star 1000, 2000 and 3000, which are basically the same juicers – only the accessories and prices are different (you will have to pay about 400-530$ depending on the model). For example, the Green Star GS-1000 Basic Juicer and Food Processor has all the basic juicing and food processing equipment. Some accessories which are not frequently used have been excluded so it costs less (about $400 on Amazon).

The newest model is the Green Star Elite Model GSE-5000, which is said to feature new jumbo twin gears, higher yields, new safety systems, a sleek design, a lighter weight, easier cleanup and increased versatility. Should you buy a Green Juicer?

Green Power Juicer is certainly an excellent choice if you have the extra time juicing and extra money to spend.

However, if you don’t have time or patience, consider getting a different juicer. If you are someone that needs to juice quickly and get out the door, you may want to think about a centrifugal juicer like the Breville Juice Fountain Elite or more compact Breville Juice Fountain. Both do well on greens and are some of the most efficient and solid centrifugal juicers on the market today. Don’t Be Misled! A Clarification from Tribest

When searching for Green Star Juicer you may be confused to find a smaller twin-gear juicer marketed under a variation of the Green Power name, such as “Green Power Kempo”, “Hippocrates by Green Power”, “Green Power Ten”, etc. According to the Tribest Corporation, the company that developed Green Star, they are trying to promote their machines as being newly designed in the new millennium, with new technological features, and that they are the new models in the Green Power line. These juicers, however should not be confused with the Green Juicer from Tribest. According to Tribest:

“These so-called “new” machines are not in fact wholly designed in the new millennium, but were designed in the early to mid-90s, and have been available in the United States beginning in 1998, from our company, since their initial date of production. We released, and are still selling, the machines in a limited test segment, however, we were not satisfied with the performance of these products, because of the smaller motor construction, and the lack of an internal motor cooling mechanism, which resulted in a tendency to overheat. We refrained from releasing them in the mainstream health products and natural foods market under the Green Power name, because the potential risk to our well-established reputation was unacceptable.

This smaller twin gear system being promoted should not be mistaken for the Heavy-Duty (HD) Twin Gear system found in the Green Star and Green Power Gold machines. The smaller gears, higher rotational speed, and the substantially reduced size of juicing chamber, straining screens, and motor construction of their machines are not refinements or improvements to the original Heavy-Duty (HD) Twin Gear system, but are a separate, untested system. Breville Juicer Reviews – Which Model is Best For You?

Looking at individual Breville juicer reviews will give you a lot of information about each individual juicer that they manufacture. But what if you don’t know which one is best for you? After all, the prices range from $99 to $499. There’s obviously a difference between them! That’s where a comparison review steps in. In this article we’ll cover all seven of the Breville juicers and talk about what features they have in common and where they differ.

The Seven Breville Juicer Models are:

• Juice Fountain Compact BJE200XL at an msrp of $99.00
• Juice Fountain Plus JE98XL at an msrp of $149.00
• Ikon Multi-speed Juice Fountain BJE510XL at an msrp of $199.00

• Dual Disc Juice Processor BJE820XL at an msrp of $399.00
• The Juice and Blend BJB840XL at an msrp of $499.00

Breville juicer

All of these seven models are manufactured by the same company, Breville, an Australian manufacturer that has been in business since 1932. They are all quite similar except for the last one in the list, the die cast citrus press. We’ll cover that one real quick, since it is so different than the others.

The citrus press juicer is a hand powered press style juicer that juices only citrus; grapefruits, oranges, lemons, etc. It is made of die cast metal to hold up against the acidity of many citrus fruits. It also features a power assisted press, which makes it easier to extract the citrus juice, less muscle needed! The big detraction on numerous consumer juicer reviews is that there is a plastic part under the press that wears out under heavy use.

All right, now let’s cover the other six juicer reviews in this line. The first four in the list, the compact, the plus, the ikon and the elite are all home grade juicers. They are the models that most people will choose to purchase for home juicing.

They are all centrifugal style juicers (vs. masticating, twin gear, single gear, and auger styles). What this means in plain English is that they will juice fast (much faster than the other styles of juicers) but will also heat the juice more than those other types typically do. This is a concern only if you are very particular about your juice heat and enzyme retention. The more fresh juice is heated, the more it loses valuable health promoting enzymes. If this is a concern for you, consider another style of juicer from another manufacturer altogether.

The compact has a 750 watt motor, the plus an 850 watt motor, the ikon a 900 watt motor and the elite has a 1,000 watt motor. For industry standards with centrifugal style juicers, these are good. With centrifugal types, the higher the motor wattage the better.

The first two in the line, the compact and the plus, have a plastic housing in a silver satin finish that mimics stainless steel. The ikon makes the upgrade to stainless steel and the elite to die cast metal. All of the Breville juicers reviewed have a very attractive appearance, however that silver finish on the bottom two models will wear with age.

Other differences are the speed controls. The compact is a one speed juicer. The plus steps it up to 2 speeds, the ikon has a whopping 5 speeds, the elite has 2 speeds.

So between these four, which is the best juicer reviewed? The compact is a great buy for the casual juicer at a low $99. The plus at $149 is a pass due to consumer reports of motor burn-outs. The upgrade to the $199 ikon makes more sense. The elite at $299 and titanium cutting blades is heading into heavy duty juicer territory. It is for users who plan on doing extensive juicing. For most families the compact or the ikon will be perfect.

Now what about those other two juicers? The dual disc juice processor and the juice & blend are both juicer/blender combos. At $399 the dual disc features a durable die cast body, a 1200 watt motor, 5 speed juicing and titanium cutting discs. Just unveiled August 2010 is the $499 juice & blend. It differs from the dual disc in that there are two separate top mounts that can be attached to the motor base. One is a juicer and one is a blender. They are basically two separate machines that share a motor base. The juice and blend also features 5 speed settings and titanium cutting discs. These two are for serious juicing and smoothie making fans, or cooks who want the creme de la creme of appliances in their kitchen!

Wheatgrass Juicer: Read this if you are thinking about buying a wheatgrass juicer!

If you are reading this, you may be thinking about purchasing one of those fancy wheatgrass juicers. You may have heard about the amazing benefits of drinking green juices – and the wheat-grass juice in particular – and would like to experience some of these health benefits for yourself.

My question is:

“Do we need to be drinking wheat grass juice and should you be running to the nearest specialty store (or to your computer) to purchase a wheat-grass juicing machine?”

I’m a big advocate of healthy diet and including LOADS of fresh raw fruits, vegetables, and greens in everyday diet – and that includes eating green salads, drinking green juices and green smoothies, and just munching on fresh fruits and veggies throughout the day. My long-time suspicion was that if I’m eating lots of greens – and that includes spinach, kale, collards, lettuce, parsley, etc., etc., all of which I add to my green smoothies (not all at the same time, mind you), I don’t need to worry about including wheatgrass in my diet.

(Now, I still believe that juicing can have tremendous benefits for health. Freshly made juice provides the body with innumerable nutrients that we need, that we often lack in our diet, and especially in some situations – juicing may be more beneficial than drinking smoothies. )

If you are thinking of buying a wheatgrass juicer, consider this.

“Popularized in the 1970s by Dr. Ann Wigmore and other natural food pioneers, tray-grown wheatgrass juice has become a familiar product in juice bars, natural food stores, and the homes of do-it-yourself juicers worldwide. The juice has been associated with many health benefits. However, many who purchase “fresh” wheatgrass juice don’t realize that it has not reached its full nutritional potential. Wheat grass grown outdoors in its natural climate has much higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll than tray-grown grass due to vast differences in the growth process.

Tray-grown wheatgrass is grown in a warm greenhouse or indoors under fluorescent lighting. After growing for 7-10 days, the plant is approximately 6-8 inches tall. It is then harvested and juiced for consumption. All I’m saying is that if you don’t have too much time during the day and too much money to spend (and who has) – it’s better to spend it on more productive activities – such as buying an all purpose juice extractor or a super-powerful blender, to prepare delicious green juices and green smoothies.

As you see, there are various pieces of equipment for fruit juice processing that transforms our favorite fruits into our favorite beverages.

It is lightweight, portable, and versatile, so you can enjoy fresh juice wherever you go!

Manual juicer can extract higher yields of juice from fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and herbs than most of centrifugal juicers. It can extract about the same amount of juice from wheatgrass as the wheatgrass-only type of juicers. Compared to centrifugal juicers such as the Breville Elite Juicer or Jack Lalanne’s Power Juicer Pro, it ensures maximum retention of nutrients. The oxidation is also kept to a minimum, which allows you to store the juice longer without losing its nutritional benefits.

Manual juicer is certainly an excellent choice if you have the extra time juicing. If you are just starting out and don’t want to make a big investment in a juicer, if you need a dedicated juicer for wheat-grass and greens, or if you a portable juicer to use it when traveling instead of the larger and heavier electric model – then a manual juicer may be a great option. 

However, if you don’t have time or patience, consider getting a different juicer for your every day juicing needs, and using manual juicer for back-up and trips. If you are someone that needs to juice and get out the door, you may want to think about a centrifugal juicer like the Breville Juice Fountain Elite or more compact Breville Juice Fountain. If you are looking for a power juicer, then you may have come across infomercials for Jack Lalanne’s power juicer and may be wondering whether it’s a good choice of juicing machine.

Jack Power Juicer Elite and Power Juicer Pro are popular choices thanks to Jack Lalanne’s popularity. Jack LaLanne is a great man and an inspiration to many people around the world. He was preaching the benefits of eating natural foods and lifting weights long before it was accepted by the mainstream. He inspires people to change their unhealthy habits, start exercising, and JUICING!

When I was shopping for a juicer, I considered Jack Lalanne Power Juicer as a possible candidate for my juicing machine. You may be thinking about it too – perhaps you have seen one of the infomercials for Power Juicer on TV, or you admire Jack Lalanne’s work and want to buy one of his creations.

Power juicer pros include quiet operation, beautiful design, powerful 3,600 RPM motor, stainless steel construction, dishwasher-safe parts for quick cleanup, super-sized detachable pulp collector, and lifetime warranty on the motor that offers peace of mind, even with daily juicing. It’s also affordable at about $150 for the Power Juicer Pro and $99 for Power Juicer Elite on Amazon.

However, after reading mixed reviews of Jack’s juicers on Amazon, I decided to choose a different juicer (Breville 800jexl Elite – it costs more money, but in my opinion it’s worth it).

I’m not saying that you should not buy the Jack Lalanne’s juicer, because there are many customers who are happy with their power juicer’s performance. For some people it seems that Power Juicer Elite and Power Juicer Pro are a welcome addition their kitchen. They say this electric juicer produces fresh fruit-and-vegetable juice quickly and easily, it’s easy to clean, and relatively quiet. However, there are also many negative reviews, that you should go to Amazon and read them before you make your purchase.

Even the Jack Lalanne’s latest juicer edition that has been redesigned with a new, sleek stainless steel finish and some great new features, such as a non-drip spout and stainless steel mesh filter, has very mixed customer reviews. Although in the product description you can read claims that it produces up to 30-percent more juice than other juicers, there are customers that complain that the remaining pulp is quite damp which means the juicer is not extracting all of the juice, and that it does not do a good job juicing leafy greens – and may leave you with whole leaves in the pulp container. It also makes a lot of foam.

The cheaper model, Jack Lalanne’s Power Juicer Deluxe Electric Juicer, is said to have some serious drawbacks, too, including chute hole that is too small.

Although none of the two models I looked at is a bad choice, and either one is definitely better than having no juicer at all; in my opinion there are better juicer choices out there.

2. Types of produce you will be juicing

Different types of juicers are better suited for juicing certain kinds of produce than others: leafy greens, soft fruits, vegetables.

There is no “perfect” juicer that will perform every juicing task with equal quality.

While a centrifugal juicer may be able to juice the rind of a pineapple more efficiently, in most situations, the low speed action of a masticating juicer allows you to juice more vegetables with greater efficiency.

A masticating juicer is especially good at juicing the green leafy vegetables such as wheatgrass, spinach, parsley, cilantro, kale, Swiss Chard, etc. While a centrifugal juicer can do a decent job juicing leafy greens, the centrifugal juicer is certainly not as efficient as a masticating juicer in this regard.

4. Size of opening

Some juicers have wide feeding chute allowing you to put whole fruits and vegetables without the need to cut them. With other machines, you will need to cut every piece of produce before being fed. The larger the opening, the less preparation is required.

5. Quality of Juice

If you are juicing for health, should you purchase a centrifugal or a mastication type juicer?

There are some claims that mastication juicers are superior because centrifugal juicers leave most of the nutrients in the pulp, which then gets thrown away, while the mastication-type juicer leaves very few nutrients in the pulp. Also, it’s possible that the heat produced by high speed action of a centrifugal juicer can be damaging to the enzymes in the juice.

While I cannot confirm or deny these statements, one thing is for sure, a masticating juicer definitely does not create the friction that a centrifugal juicer will produce. So, I’d say, if you are juicing to help recover from some serious medical condition – then perhaps you should do more research on this subject.

For the majority of people – especially those who seem to be always pressed for time – I’d say the quality convenience of use is probably the most important factor.

6. Oxidation

The twin-screw juicers use lower speed and therefore incorporate less air in the juice. However, because it takes so long to make the juice, by the time you are finished, the first part of the batch may be 20 minutes old.

So, if you are planning to drink most of your juices immediately after extraction, then a centrifugal juicers is still a good choice, in my opinion.

If you want to store your juices to be consumed hours or days after extraction, then you may want to consider a single gear or twin-screw juicing machine. Keep in mind that it is usually recommended that vegetable juices be consumed within 15 minutes of their preparation, since enzyme activity in juice 30 minutes old is one-half that of freshly made juice.

7. Yield

How much juice is extracted versus how much juice is still left in the pulp after juicing. The goal is to extract the most juice from the fruit or vegetable as possible. In general, centrifugal juicers that eject the pulp outside the machine yield less juice than juicers that keep the pulp in the basket. However, with continual ejection, a larger quantity of juice may be made without stopping to clean out the basket.

8. Noise Level

Masticating and triturating juicers are more quiet that centrifugal juicers, but manual juicers are the sure winners in this category.

9. Versatility

If you want to use your juicer for more than juicing, then masticating juicers masticating and triturating juicers can be used to make baby food, pasta, grind meat and to make nut butter. You may also consider getting a blender.

A powerful blender such as Vitamix or Blendtec can be used for making juices and perform various other blending and grinding functions.

10. Durability and Reliability

Most centrifugal juicers come with the limited warranty period (1-3 years), but many higher end juicers provide warranty periods which go as long as 15 years. Look for companies that supply replacement parts at reasonable cost.

11. Price

I know price is important for most people, however, the most expensive juice extractor isn’t necessarily the best juicer for you.

If you are still wondering whether juicing will fit into your family’s diet and nutrition program, an inexpensive $90 juicer may suffice. If you are still not sure how often you will use your juicer, don’t spend more than you absolutely have to.

The main factors to consider when buying an inexpensive juicer is the power of motor – many lower cost juicers have really weak motor that will not last for someone that is serious about juicing.

12. Warranty

Many cheap juicers may only have a 90 day year warranty. It’s best to buy a juicer with at least 3 year warranty; and the quality of the juicer – many of the lower priced juicers are made of mostly plastic (it will tend to stain over time), versus stainless steel construction of the more expensive machines. Most of the low cost juicers available in department stores are centrifugal ejection juicers.

Think about a juicer as an investment in your health, and as any investment – it should last.

Shopping for a juice extractor and deciding which juicer to buy can be confusing. When you read the descriptions and you are not familiar with all the mysteriously sounding terms – RPM, masticating, triturating, and centrifugal – you may be left wondering which juicer is best for your needs and lifestyle.

A juicer or juice extractor is a machine that mechanically separates juice from the solid part (pulp) of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and herbs. The pulp is usually discarded, but can also be used in other recipes (for instance in soups or baking) or composting. A juicer differs from a blender: a juicer separates the juice from the pulp, while the blender blends everything together, producing what some people describe as “whole food juice”.

Keep in mind is that while there are several types of juicers and hundreds of different models and brands available on the market today, there is no “perfect” juicer that will perform every juicing operation with equal quality. That is why, when shopping for a juice machine, you should first ask yourself, what factors are important to you, considering your needs and lifestyle. Types of Juice Extractors

Manual Versus Electic Juicers

Manual Juice Extractors. Manual juicers require you to do most of the extracting work, but they can be a handy appliance to have in the kitchen, as they don’t need electricity to work and are usually easy to clean.

Manual juicers can juice a surprisingly large variety of fruits and vegetables. Commonly used manual juicers today are citrus juicers. The press style juicer squeezes the juice out of the produce by pressure, such as the Hamilton Beach 932 Commercial Citrus Juicer.

Many people use manual juicers to squeeze wheatgrass. Most reviewers seem to recommend Z-Star Manual Juicer by Tribest as the best juicer for its price. With Z Star juicer you can not only juice wheatgrass. The Z Star Manual Juicer can also extract great-tasting and nutritious juice from a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens. It is lightweight, portable, and versatile, so you can enjoy fresh juice wherever you go! Another great choice is the Hurricane Juicer.

If you are just starting out and don’t want to make a big investment in a juicer, if you need a dedicated juicer for wheatgrass and greens, or if you a portable juicer to use it when traveling instead of the larger and heavier electric model – then a manual juicer may be a great choice for you.

Electric Juicers. Most of the juice extractors used today in homes and restaurants are electric, which means they require much less effort to produce juice than their manual counterparts. There are three main types of electric juicers: centrifugal juicers, masticating juicers – also known as single gear juicers or single auger juicers, and triturating juicers – or twin gear juicers.

Centrifugal, Masticating and Triturating Juicers

Centrifugal Juicers are electric juicers that use blades and a sieve to separate juice from pulp. They first grate the produce into a pulp, and then the centrifugal force is used to force the pulp through a strainer screen by spinning it at a very high RPM speed. Centrifugal ejection juicers produce juice by first shredding the produce that is placed into the juicer, next the small shreds and juice that is released is centrifuged into a screen where the juice passes through the screen, and the pulp is “ejected” into a pulp collection bin.

Centrifugal juicers are the most popular and inexpensive type of juicers. The vast majority of juicers you will find in department stores are centrifugal juicing machines. They have many advantages: they produce juice quickly and easily, and on average take much less time to clean than other types of juicers. Their feeding chutes are wide enough that little or no chopping of fruits and vegetables is required as preparation to juicing – making the process even faster.

Although centrifugal juice extractors can juice almost any type of fruit and vegetable; they are not the top choice for leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, parsley or wheat grass. Although you can certainly produce juice from greens with centrifugal juice machines, the amount of juice you will get will be much than if you used a single or twin gear juicer.

Also, the pulp expelled by most centrifugal juicers is still relatively wet, which means that some juice is wasted.

Another important consideration for some people may be the shelf life of the juice made by a centrifugal juicer – especially if you would like to keep some of your juice for later use. Because of the high speed required to extract juice, a considerable amount of oxygen is dissolved into the juice. The oxygen bubbles in the juice cause the juice to oxidize (spoil) rapidly. So, the juice made with a centrifugal juice extractor should be consumed immediately and cannot be effectively stored for any length of time without loss of nutritional value. If you plan to store juice, consider a lower speed juicer like a single or twin gear juicer.

When buying an inexpensive centrifugal juicer, check the length of the warranty period and avoid machines with warranties shorter than 1 year.

Masticating Juicers – also known as single gear juicers or single auger juicers – are juicers that “chew” fruit to a pulp before squeezing out the juice.

Masticating Juicers use a single gear or auger that literally chews and crushes fruit and vegetable matter pushing it against a static screen allowing juice to flow through the screen while pulp is expelled through a separate outlet. Masticating juicers are generally more efficient than centrifugal juicers because they can extract more juice from the same amount of food (i.e. the pulp comes out drier).

Masticating juicers are very capable at juicing virtually any fruit and vegetable, and single gear juicers will also extract juice from leaves and grasses, like wheatgrass, spinach, lettuce, parsley, and other leafy greens and herbs. (Champion Juicers are the exception as they do not juice wheatgrass or greens very well).

Masticating juicing machines operate at slower RPM speeds than centrifugal juicers, producing less foam and heat, which results in less oxygen and more nutrition in your juice. The low speed also prolongs the shelf life of the juice so you can usually keep your juice for a few days.

Masticating juice extractors are more versatile than centrifugal juicers because they can also juice wheatgrass, and, in addition to juicing, these juicers also homogenize foods to make baby foods, sauces, nut butters, ice creams and fruit sorbets. Some of these machines may even make pasta, bread sticks and rice cakes.

Triturating Juicers – twin gear or triturating juicers – are juicers with twin gears that first crush fruits and vegetables and then press them.

Twin gear triturating machines are usually the most expensive juicers offering the best juice yield (one of the most expensive juicers Norwalk juicer Model 275 costs about $2,400). Twin gear juicers turn at even slower speeds (RPMs) than masticating juicers, resulting in even less oxidation from foam and less destruction of nutrients from heat. Low temperatures and rpm minimize oxidation so juice lasts a long time, meaning you can refrigerate and keep your juice for a few days.

Twin gear juicers operate by pressing food between two interlocking roller gears. This juicing process yields a larger volume of juice. The high pressure squeezing force of the twin gears breaks open tough cell walls and releases more enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals.

Twin gear juicers are the most efficient type of juicer available and can extract higher yields of juice from fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, wheatgrass, and herbs. The pulp that comes out of twin gear juicers is the driest of all the types of juicers. These juicers extract as much juice from wheatgrass as the wheatgrass-only type of juicers.

A downside to twin-screw type juicers like the Green Power is that it takes quite a bit of force to push items like carrots into the juicer, because there is no cutting blade action, just the gripping/squeezing action of the twin screws.

Just like masticating juicers, triturating juicers do more than just extract juice. They do a great job homogenizing baby foods, nut butters, ice creams, fruit sorbets and many have optional or included attachments for making pasta, bread sticks, and rice cakes.

Wheatgrass Juicers are juice extractors used solely for making juice from wheatgrass and other leafy greens, as well as some soft fruits like grapes. Wheatgrass juicers are not suitable for extracting juice from vegetables and most fruits. Wheatgrass juicers are available in both electric and manual models.

WOW – Way better than expected!

I juice at least once a day as I primarily eat raw foods.

My Jack LaLane juicer finally wore out after 2.5 years of daily use. I was tempted to buy another – but I liked the way everything including the pulp catcher is all in one unit. So glad I got the Breville.

This thing is POWERFUL, especially compared to “Jack LaLanne”. It is so powerful I usually don’t even use the pusher except to cover the top so your ceiling doesn’t get covered with stuff. Other reviewers have mentioned that tendency. What wasn’t mentioned is that the reason it does that is because the motor is so beefy that stuff will shoot straight up.

When juicing soft stuff I immediately cover the top with my hand. The design of this thing is absolutely first rate. Even down to the plug, which has a molded loop so that it is easy to unplug and plug in! No tool is required to remove the basket, as in most other juicers. Breville uses a combo of ingenious design and magnets to hold it in place!

Ease of use and fit and finish is perfect.

Clean up is really a 2 minute operation and I don’t even own a dishwasher.

It will stain eventually, as every juicer I have ever owned does. Carrot juice would make a great dye The pulp on this juicer is a bit wetter than the Jack LaLanne. The “Jack” had a much larger basket and a much slower rotation. I believe that may account for it. But it isn’t much wetter – just very slightly.

Juicing with a blender!

I just recently received my new Vita-mix (for my birthday – I will not say how old I am, but I sure hope that Vitamix – and the delicious, natural foods that I will prepare with it  – will help me look younger longer), and I decided to test it to prepare some juice. Juicing with a blender is certainly a good option that you can use if you don’t have a juicer – or even if you have one. Here are some instructions for you and a video. But first – before anybody asks, let’s briefly explain the difference between a juicer and a blender.

What is the difference between a juicer and a blender?

A juicer separates the liquid from the fiber. A blender is designed to liquefy food by chopping it up at high speeds. It doesn’t separate the juice from the pulp, so the result is a mushy liquid, that in some cases may not taste very good. A blender can be quite useful in tandem with a juicer. For example, bananas contain little juice, so juicing them would be hard, but they taste delicious when blended with many juices, for example pineapple juice, or green vegetable juice.

Yes, you can make JUICE with your BLENDER! And although any blender might do the job, probably the best blender for making juices is Vitamix.
