Question: What about juicing for diabetics? I am a diabetic. What juices are safe to drink since so many products are high in sugar?

Juicing can be a very powerful nutritional therapy, but most people misapply this therapy by drinking mostly sweet fruit juices and store-bought, pasteurized juices.

Freshly made, raw vegetable juices and green juices are much more potent than fruit juices, especially for people who are dealing with diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, or any other degenerative disease.

Juice can be considered a processed food. A whole food takes longer for the body to digest and thus, the sugar content of the food is released slowly into the bloodstream. Digestion is the body’s natural way of slowly releasing vitamins and nutrients into the bloodstream.

Juicing removes pulp from the juice, so the food can no longer be considered “whole”, however, unlike other processed foods, freshly made, raw juice provides an amazing amount of healthy nutrients into your body.

At the same time, we need to realize that we are potentially releasing sugar into our bloodstream. So, it’s important to keep tabs on how much sugar is in the produce that we are juicing.

Juicing Tips For Diabetics

1. When juicing for diabetes, weight loss or for health, focus more on juicing leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables rather than fruit.

To keep juice content low in sugars, focus on leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables, as these are low in sugar content. Generally speaking, vegetables that are grown above ground are low in sugar while those grown below ground are high in sugar and this includes beets, carrots, yams, etc.

Dark green leafy vegetables rank as superfoods with the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Green juice recipes incorporating greens such as spinach, collards and kale are great for diabetics.

Celery or cucumber provides great “base” for the juice for diabetes, to which you can add your greens and something to make it a bit sweeter like an apple. Try to use as little apple as you can – just enough to make it not to “green” so you can drink it. Other ingredients to incorporate to sweeten it up a bit instead of apple like parsnip, sweet potato, carrot or beet.

For example, make juice from spinach, cucumber, celery, carrots and green apple. Another juicing combination is kale with celery and pineapple. Or try a juice that includes beets, spinach, collard greens, lettuce, carrots and red apple. For a green juice that does not include fruit, try juicing spinach, cabbage, carrots, broccoli and green bell pepper.

When starting juicing for the first time, add a small amount of apple or carrot to their juice to make the juice more palatable. As you get used to savory taste to many juices, you may try to remove the carrot from the drink and juice vegetables that have a lower sugar content.

2. Making “whole juice” a.k.a. “green smoothies” by blending whole vegetables and leafy greens in a powerful blender.

Drinking 3 cups of fresh vegetable juice (or more) each day will help the body detoxify and regenerate through the assimilation of the vital nutrients.

The timing when you drink the juice is important. For example, if you are exercising and find your blood sugar levels are running low, a four ounce glass of juice can provide a quicker way to elevate those levels back to where they need to be.

Also, ingesting juice on an empty stomach leads to a quicker spike of blood sugar levels.

Note: If you are concerned about diabetes, then consult your doctor and/or other health professional before starting a juicing routine. When consuming juice, keep a close watch on your blood sugar levels. This is important because some juices (for example, mango) are absorbed at a quicker rate and lead to a more rapid rise in blood sugar levels compared to those juices like vegetable juice absorbed at a slower pace.

The following are recipes that have been published on this site that have low sugar content and therefore are recommended for diabetics:

Kale Juice Recipes

Green lemonade contains a big bunch of kale in it along with apples, celery, ginger, and an organic lemon. It tastes amazing.

Green Kale Lemonade
1 bunch of kale
2 stalks of celery
1 inch piece of ginger
2 apples
1 lemon with the ends cut off.

Wash all your goodies thoroughly and pass through the juicer. Ginger adds heat to this tart kale limeade.

Spinach Juice Recipes

Spinach juice on its own is quite strong, so I encourage you to experiment mixing it with other juices, such as carrot, tomato, apple.

Spinach-Carrot
5 carrots
1 cup spinach

Spinach-Tomato
1 cup spinach
4 tomatoes, quartered

Spinach-Beet-Carrot
1/2 beet with top
3 carrots
1/2 cup spinach

Spinach-Carrot-Apple-Cucumber
4 to 5 medium carrots
1 apple
a piece of cucumber
1 cup spinach

Organic produce for juicing is not always easy to find, plus it usually costs considerably more than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.

Where I live I have to drive 10+ miles for the nearest store that offers good selection of organic foods. I admit in the past I have been reluctant to go out of my way to buy organic produce for juicing, and I’ve been just shopping at the nearest food market.

However, since I started to really get into the topics of pesticides, herbicides, GMOs, animal cruelty, environmental destruction, and other atrocities of the industrialized food production system that we have in the US, I have finally gotten over my laziness and started to put my money where my mouth is.

So, I have a question for you.

Do you use organic or conventional produce for your juices?

While, in my opinion, consuming conventional fruits and vegetables is better than not consuming any plant foods at all, when you really research what you are digesting when eating conventionally grown foods and the effects these chemicals have on your health, your appetite for fresh produce may quickly diminish.

Now, I’m not quite sure whether juicing will further concentrate the toxic ingredients, or whether they will be removed with the pulp (perhaps if you are reading this and you know the answer, you can enlighten me by leaving a comment below).

However, I’m sure that whatever amounts of toxic pesticides, herbicides, and other substances are left in your juice, it’s NOT what you have in mind when preparing your juice, especially when you are juicing for health.

After all, the fruits and greens that we all use in our juicer recipes are fabulous foods, full of vital nutrients that are supposed help keep our bodies strong and immune to disease, right?

Well, sort of.

Many studies demonstrate that most conventionally grown foods contain pesticide and other chemical residues. Many of these foods can literally carry “a cocktail of synthetic poisons.” A growing body of research is showing that repeated exposures, to cocktails of small amounts of synthetic chemicals, have a range of adverse health effects.

The average conventionally grown apple has 20 to 30 artificial chemicals on its skin, even after rinsing. If you’re eating non-organic celery today, you may be ingesting 67 pesticides with it, according to a report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Many scientists believe these exposures, of minute quantities of agricultural chemicals, are very significant, especially for children. Many of these substances are endocrine disruptors, which can cause a host of health problems, including birth defects, all kinds of cancers, diabetes, obesity, autism, and other.

Children are at greater risk because they play close to the ground, regularly have their hands in their mouths, eyes or noses, and have unique diets. They absorb more pesticides from their environment than adults and are less able to detoxify and excrete pesticides.

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit focused on public health, scoured nearly 100,000 produce pesticide reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine what fruits and vegetables we eat have the highest, and lowest, amounts of chemical residue.

Most alarming are the fruits and vegetables dubbed the “Dirty Dozen,” which contain 47 to 67 pesticides per serving. These foods are believed to be most susceptible because they have soft skin that tends to absorb more pesticides.

The Dirty Dozen – Buy Organic if possible

So here is the list of the so-called Dirty Dozen, the foods that are most contaminated, so we need to limit their consumption or only buy organic:

Celery
Peaches
Strawberries
Apples
Blueberries
Nectarines
Sweet bell peppers
Leafy Greens: Spinach, Kale and Collard greens
Cherries
Potatoes
Grapes (imported)
Lettuce

This list contains most fruits and vegetables that I frequently use in my juices, green smoothies and salads!

The Clean 15

Conventional Produce Lowest in Pesticides

Not all non-organic fruits and vegetables have a high pesticide level. Some produce has a strong outer layer that provides a defense against pesticide contamination. The group found a number of non-organic fruits and vegetables dubbed the “Clean 15″ that contained little to no pesticides.

Onions
Avocados
Sweet corn
Pineapples
Mango
Sweet peas
Asparagus
Kiwi fruit
Cabbage
Eggplant
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Grapefruit
Sweet potatoes
Sweet onions
Honeydew Melon

To limit your exposure, it makes sense to peel fruits, if possible, and not to eat skins, unless you are able to purchase those vegetables in organic form. Remove and discard the outermost leaves of lettuce and cabbage, and other surfaces that cannot be peeled can be washed with soap and water, or a commercial vegetable wash.

Some of my favorite foods and ingredients for my smoothies are on the dirty-dozen list. And even the “OK to eat produce” isn’t completely safe.

For example, a study out of Harvard shows that even tiny, allowable amounts of a common pesticide class can have dramatic effects on brain chemistry. Organophosphate insecticides (OP’s) are among the most widely used pesticides in the U.S. & have long been known to be particularly toxic for children. This is the first study to examine their effects across a representative population with average levels of exposure. Finding :: Kids with above-average pesticide exposures are 2x as likely to have ADHD. Read the full report.

And this is just one example. The fact is the chemicals sprayed on conventional food crops have been linked to numerous diseases, including birth defects, Parkinson’s, numerous cancers and diabetes.

Here is where you can check the pesticide residue on popular produce – go to http://www.whatsonmyfood.org/

I don’t know about you, but I find it appalling that eating these (and other) foods that we buy because they are healthy (and delicious) can make us sick!

Personally, I don’t want to worry about the dangerous toxins when I buy my fruits, vegetables and greens for juicing, blending or cooking.

In my opinion, organic is not a luxury; it’s how food is supposed to be!

Buying organic and pesticide-free whenever possible makes sense and is an important start. But being a responsible consumer will not make enough of a difference to make our food system sustainable and safe for ourselves and future generations.

We need to demand from our politicians and policy makers complete ban of the use of these chemicals, as well as providing more subsidies to organic farming, instead of industrial agriculture.

Juicing is great and green juice in particular is a great energy and health booster.

However, sometimes, I just want something more substantial and filling.

A glass of a green smoothie could be an option, but high fruit content in many smoothie recipes can be a problem for some people with diabetes and blood sugar issues.

Also, the smoothies are really, …well… smooth (duh!) – almost like baby food – so, for variety, you may want to add some crunchiness to your meals from time to time.

Whatever the reason, I encourage to add some Green Power Soup and Salad Recipes to your healthy eating recipes repertoire .

Low-Calorie, Low-Sugar, Low-Fat Raw Blended Soups and Salads

To make these blended concoctions, you will need a blender. Any blender will do, but if you are looking for a blender, I always recommend that you invest in a quality power machine, such as Vitamix or Blendtec.

I make a distinction between blended salads and soups, although they are really quite similar.

The difference is that salads are blended at low speeds without adding any liquid, so they are a little more tricky to prepare (see tips below), especially if you have a regular blender. Because they are blended at slow speeds, it is generally not recommended to add tough greens, such as kale or collards, as these ingredients make it unpalatable. Blended salads are made of primarily juicy vegetables and soft leafy greens, such as spinach, and lots of herbs. Such salads have thick, creamy consistency with crunchy texture, and can be eaten from a bowl.

Soups, on the other hand, are made using both high speed and low speed settings on your blender, with addition of water or other liquid. Step one is to blend any tough greens with some avocado for creaminess to create “soup base.” (I guess You might also try juicing some veggies first, but that would add another step, plus, we want to take a break from juicing ) Then you will add softer ingredients and blend them at slow speed to add texture.

The best ingredients for both soups and salads are cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, peppers, and zucchini, with only delicate greens added, such as spinach or lettuce. Hard and bitter greens such as kale should not be added on low speeds, as these ingredients would make it unpalatable.

Herbs, Sprouts and Condiments. You will want to add lots of herbs, such as basil, dill, parsley, cilantro, and other for outrageously delicious taste. Sprouts are also terrific to add to the blend or just sprinkle on top. If you don’t have fresh herbs, dried herbs are fine too. You may also experiment with other condiments, such as curry powder or hot sauce, onion or garlic.

Sweeteners. Even though this is supposed be a savory tasting recipe, adding some sweetness is really important. Of course, you may skip sweeteners altogether, but – unless you have strong reasons to do it – I really advise you to also add a sweet ingredient. I like to add some sweet fruits, for example, a piece of a sweet pear, apple, a few strawberries, or grapes, but you may choose to add a little bit of honey, agave syrup, or some other sweetener. It will make a big difference in the final result!

Creamy Avocado Energy Soup Recipe

Here is a soup recipe that I put together in a spur of the moment – I wanted to prepare a blended salad, but did not have the usual juicy ingredients in my kitchen that are required for salad, such as tomatoes and cucumbers.

I blended the tougher ingredients first – in this case celery with a piece of avocado and a bit of water to create a soup base, and then added other ingredients on low speed to create some texture.

Here are the ingredients that I used (just because I had them in my kitchen at the moment) – and the soup turned out quite tasty!

Ingredients for soup base:
1 large stalk celery
2 lettuce leaves
1/2 small avocado
Blend well on high speed. This will create a nice creamy base.

Ingredients for texture:
1 small zucchini
1/2 pear or a bit of honey (for sweetness)
fresh basil leaves to taste (from my window garden)
a small piece of green onion
Blend on lowest speed that will get the job done. Optionally, you may just chop these ingredients and mix them with the liquid.
I also added a pinch of salt.

Pour into a bowl and enjoy!

Here is the result:

Green Power Energy Soup Recipe: The only difference between soup and salad is just that you add a bit of liquid, such as water, to your soup; whereas salads require no added liquid - which makes them a little bit more tricky to do, especially if you don't have a powerful blender

How to make a blended salad?

Blended salads can be a bit tricky to prepare. Because you are not going to add any liquid, so it is important to start with ingredients that contain most water – tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. – so, cut them into pieces and put them into your blender FIRST. Switch your blender ON and keep it on the lowest speed that will get the job done. Next, gradually keep adding other ingredients – leafy greens and herbs. If adding honey or other sweetener, add it to the mix at the end, so it doesn’t just stick to the container. If you have a Vitamix, use the pusher to help do the job.

This is important especially if you are using a regular blender to make the blended salad, and not VitaMix or Blendtec, which are considered the best blender on the market. They are costly, but totally worth the investment!

Low-Calorie, Fat-Free Blended Salad Recipe (No Salad Dressing Required!)

The problem with many salads is that the greens are soaked in fatty dressings with many unhealthy ingredients. Of course, you may make healthy salad dressing yourself. However, this Italian-flavored blended salad requires no salad dressing whatsoever – and it still tastes delicious!

Ingredients:
• 1 stalk celery
• 2 tomatoes
• 1 cucumber
• 2 scallions
• some fresh basil leaves (adjust quantity to taste)
• some fresh oregano (can substitute dried oregano)
• raw honey or raw agave nectar (adjust quantity to taste)
• optional jalapeno or other hot pepper
• 5 oz spinach
• optional toppings: handful sweet bell pepper, diced, 1 chopped celery stalk

Step 1.
Save 1/2 tomato and a piece of cucumber for garnish. Blend the remaining tomatoes, cucumber and celery in your blender at low speed.

Step 2.
Chop the remaining ingredients and add to your blender and blend on low speed. If you don’t have a powerful blender, then you may want to add spinach gradually as you blend. Remember to use low speed.

Step 3.
Pour the salad into a bowl. Chop remaining tomato and cucumber and sprinkle on top.

Enjoy!

When was the last time you had some kale? Yesterday? Last week? Never?

The fact is kale is often neglected when it comes to choosing your greens. It’s certainly not most people’s first choice when it comes to preparing salads or vegetable side-dishes.

So, why should you choose kale? What are the nutritional benefits of kale juice? And is it even a good idea to use kale in smoothies?

Here are facts about kale, plus kale juice recipes, kale smoothie recipes, plus, as a bonus – crunchy kale chips recipe!

Let’s get going!

What Is Kale?

Kale is really the King of Greens. Dr. Joel Fuhrman ranks kale as one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. Kale belongs to the Brassica family (Brassica oleracea). This family also includes broccoli, bok choy, kohlrabi, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, Chinese cabbage and collard greens. All these greens are well known for their sulfur-containing phytonutrients, which are claimed to help with cancer prevention.

There are many health benefits to eating kale on a regular basis. Kale is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and manganese, and is a very good source of dietary fiber, copper, calcium, vitamin B6, and potassium. So why not add it to your family’s diet with these easy recipes!

Kale

Kale Juice Recipes

If you have tried to make kale juice before and it tasted horrible, you may have given up. Plus, some juicers are just not made to juice something like kale. However, with the right kale juice recipe, you will love drinking this green! Just remember that greens are too potent and strongly flavored to juice on their own. Always mix them with other veggies and fruits.

Make sure you thoroughly wash your greens. Some of the leaves come from right on top of the ground and are usually covered in grit and sand.

You’ll need a lot of kale to make juice. A 1.5 pound bunch of kale yields about 1 cup of vivid green juice using Breville 800JEXL juicer. You will get more from the kale if you roll the leaves into balls and juice them together with the carrots and apples.

Green Kale Lemonade

Green lemonade contains a big bunch of kale in it along with apples, celery, ginger, and an organic lemon. It tastes amazing.

1 bunch of kale
2 stalks of celery
1 inch piece of ginger
2 apples
1 lemon with the ends cut off.

Wash all your goodies thoroughly and pass through the juicer. Ginger adds heat to this tart kale limeade.

Miracle Tonic Kale Juice Recipe

Run ingredients through your juicer. Yield about 2 servings.

Tip 1: If you feel like having a special treat, you can add some watermelon or cantaloupe chunks if available. This may push the juice quantity up to 3 small servings.
Tip 2: You can add some ginger for extra bite if you wish. Lemon also goes well with this combination.

Minty Kale Juice

Mint adds an interesting touch to this kale juice.

Mix horseradish and soy sauce in a glass. Add tomato juice and stir well until horseradish is well distributed. Add kale juice, celery juice, lemon juice, and hot sauce. Stir well. Serve with celery rib garnish, over ice if desired. Serve immediately. Makes about 1 cup juice (Recipe via Seriouseats).

Kale Green Smoothie Recipes

Drinking your greens juiced is great, but sometimes you want something more substantial. Green smoothies provide more calories and fiber, and are much more filling, so they can even replace the whole meal. Plus kids really love them!

I love using kale in green smoothies for myself and my family. It really is mild tasting, so you usually don’t even know it’s there. The fruits really help to mask the strong flavor of the greens, making them much more palatable.

Strawberry Kale Banana Smoothie

1 large ripe banana
3 kale leaves
1 ripe pear
1 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 cup water

Kale Power Smoothie

1 Medium to large ripe banana, peeled
2 Kale leaves, washed
1 celery stalk
1 apple
1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
Honey (optional) as a sweetener
1 cup water

If you like, you can also add 1 cup yogurt or kefir to add some healthy probiotic and more creaminess to your smoothie.

Kale Chips

Here is a recipe for a healthy alternative to potato chips. These crispy little bites of raw kale nutrition are a big hit with young kids (and adults).

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
2. Wash 1 bunch of curly kale and cut into chip smaller pieces.
3. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet and toss with olive oil.
4. Add some seasoning to taste: salt, pepper, etc.
5. Add the juice of 1 lemon
6. After you’ve massaged your kale with oil and seasoning for a few minutes, take about 1 table spoon of honey or agave and slowly drizzle it over the kale.
7. Bake for about 30 minutes.
8. Be amazed!

The kale will shrink quite a bit, so make more than you think you need. If your oven can be set on a warming temperature, around 100°F, then you can also make raw kale chips in the oven. Otherwise you’ll need a dehydrator to make raw kale chips. If using dehydrator, let dehydrate 12 plus hours, until Kale is crunchy!

Nutritional Benefits Of Kale Juice

Kale is a superstar in the arena of carotenoids and flavonoids, two powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. It’s also a rich vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, tryptophan, potassium and copper. It also sports other important antioxidants such as lutein. The calcium in kale is absorbed well by the body. The flavonoids such as quercetin act as powerful anti-inflammatory nutrients.

According to recent research results, kale is an incredible source of well-absorbed calcium, which is one of the many factors that may help prevent osteoporosis.

One cup of kale provides about 10% of the RDA of omega-3 fatty acids that helps regulate the body’s inflammatory process. A megadose of vitamin K further aids to fight against excessive inflammatory-related problems, such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and asthma.

What is more, one cup of kale has only 36 calories and zero grams of fat, which makes it a great diet aid. Furthermore, one cup contains nearly 20% of the RDA of dietary fiber, which promotes regular digestion, prevents constipation, lowers blood sugar and curbs overeating.

So, What Is Kale Good For?

Kale can pretty much benefit your whole body

Your skin, eyes, nails, bones, heart (and cholesterol levels), and your digestive system all benefit. It helps prevent cancer, strengthens immune system, fights inflammation, helps detoxify your body. On top of that, regular consumption of leafy greens, such as kale, helps regulate blood sugar levels (preventing diabetes) and helps maintain healthy weight.

How To Choose Kale

The richer the color of the leaves, the higher the nutrient content will be. Make sure that the kale looks fresh and not wilted. Avoid leaves with a lot of yellow or decay. Smaller, tender leaves are best. Pay attention to the stems as well. Make sure that they have a healthy appearance and trim off any thick stems and small blemishes before juicing or cooking.

You can choose either the dark green curly kale or a purple variety. Alternatively you can opt for ornamental kale, which has a less potent flavor. Dinosaur kale is a slightly sweeter choice.

Greens can be used in salads and in place of lettuce on sandwiches. However, for these purposes, use only very young, small, tender leaves. Kale is also delicious when steamed with diced onions, and garlic, a little bit of salt and pepper.

The bitter taste of kale becomes more pronounced the longer it is stored, so it’s best to use it when still fresh. Kale keeps quite well in the fridge, provided that you store it unwashed. As with most of your green leafy veggies, it is a good idea to wrap the leaves in a paper towel, before placing it in a plastic bag. The paper towel helps to absorb moisture and therefore keeps it fresh for a longer period. You can also freeze kale for later use. This works well for smoothies and juices. Wash and dry the kale thoroughly, then shred it and place it in a plastic bag. Remove as much air as possible, before freezing.

It’s best to buy kale grown with the organic method so that all the nutrition is kept intact, and no toxic, systemic pesticides have made their way into the leaves where they cannot be washed off.

Under the law, organic farmers cannot use chemical pesticides or genetically modified organisms which increase pesticide exposure. Unfortunately, when grown with petrochemical pest controls, kale is number 12 in the Dirty Dozen, tying with collar greens and slightly less than lettuce. Chemical pesticides are toxins, and eating lots of them can be toxic to the central nervous system –including the brain and spinal column, others may disrupt the endocrine function in the body which secrets hormones directly into the blood stream; they may increase the risk of cancers and other diseases. We should all take precautions to reduce our exposure to pesticides including the residues on foods that we eat.

Note: Kale contains oxalates or oxalic acid. If you have had any problem with your kidney or gallbladder, it is usually recommended that you ask your doctor or nutritionist before ingesting foods high in oxalic acid. Even though kale isn’t as high in oxalic acid as spinach, you may need to avoid or limit the amounts of kale that you eat.

Juicing for weight loss can help you achieve great results, but you may be wondering how to do it right…

What is the best juice for weight loss… is it fruit juice or vegetable juice? How much to drink? How often? Can you eat other foods, or, like Joe Cross from the Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead movie, should you go all the way and do juice fasting for fastest results?

To help you figure this out and set up a perfect strategy for juicing weight loss, you need to understand the properties of both and why juicing for weight loss may be a good strategy to jump start your diet efforts.

Juicing for Weight Loss: Vegetable or Fruit Juice?

Vegetable Juice for Weight Loss

Fresh vegetable juice – made with fresh vegetables and greens – will provide your body with loads of nutrients that it needs to function on the optimal level, while being very low in calories, which makes them the perfect choice for weight loss.

You see, even though you are overweight (which means you have been consuming plenty of calories), that doesn’t mean that you have been supplying your body with all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and everything else that it needs to function at the optimal level. In fact, usually the opposite is the case. Most foods that cause us to gain weight provide us just with “empty calories” or, even worse, provide us with dangerous and toxic materials that your body needs to get rid of to stay healthy, such as food preservatives, unhealthy fats, food additives and colorings, etc.

Vegetable juice is well known for its detoxifying properties. It can help you to cleanse your system of waste materials, including solid materials. That will lead to a quick reduction in weight for you.

Because most vegetables don’t have as much sugar as fruits, veggie juice is a great addition to weight loss plans and fitness programs. The problem with some of the vegetable juices, especially the green juices, is that they taste unpalatable to some people. If this is a problem for you, it’s best to add more sweet tasting vegetables to your recipe (such as carrots, beets, or sweet peppers) or a little bit of fruit to your juicing mix, such as an apple or pear.

Fruit Juice For Weight Loss

Like vegetable juices, fruit juices supply our bodies with great nutrients. For example, citrus fruit juices are particularly well-known for their healing and weight loss qualities.

However, most people who are thinking about weight loss are concerned about the high sugar content of fruit juices.

For this reason, the best solution for juicing weight loss success is using a combination of juices. While simply creating apple juice or orange juice is fine, the best benefit will come from combining mostly vegetable sources with a little fruit.

Try to aim for 70-80% of vegetables and greens, and 20-30% of fruit juices.

This type of combination maximizes nutrition and lowers the overall level of sugar found within in the finished juice.

Another great thing about fruits is that they are high in soluble fiber. Fiber can help to regulate your colon and allow you to process food more efficiently. If you want to preserve fiber (which will also help to slow down the absorption of sugar) would be not juice your fruit, but instead, run it through a high quality blender. That will allow you to get your daily fiber as well as extra nutrients from your fruit juice.

Juicing Recipes For Weight Loss

So, what is the best juice for weight loss? That is really up to you. For the best results, you probably should do a combination of both. In any case, you’re likely to lose weight and feel more healthy too when you follow a sensible juicing program.

The nice thing about both fruits and vegetables is that you have the ability to change things up. It’s not as if you only have one fruit and one vegetable to pick from. There are many different types of each.

Find some juice combinations that you like. Juicing for weight loss doesn’t have to be boring or feel like a chore. You should be able to find some great juice recipes that you actually enjoy and can benefit from health wise.

Here are a few fruit and vegetable juice recipes to get you started:

Carrots & Green Juicer Recipe
2-4 carrots
4-8 leaves romaine, spinach and/or kale
2 apples (optional to cut astringent taste)

Carrot Spinach Lemon Juice Recipe

3 medium carrots
2 cups of spinach
¼ lemon

Carrot Cucumber Apple Juice Recipe

3 medium carrots
1 medium cucumber
1/2 apple

Apple Celery Spinach Juice Recipe

1 medium apple
2 celery stalks
1-2 cups of spinach

Apple Cucumber Surprise Juice Recipe

1 medium Apple
2 celery stalks
1-2 cups of whatever veggies in your kitchen

Celery Juice Recipe with Strawberry

5 Celery Stalks
1/2 cup of strawberries

Celery Beet Cleansing Juicing Recipe

2 celery stalks
1 beet
1 cilantro bunch
a handful of spinach

Refreshing Cleansing Celery Pear Cucumber Juice

2 pears
4 stalks celery
2 cucumbers

Green Lemonade Recipe

4-8 leaves of romaine lettuce and/or kale
2 large apples
2 lemons
1 carrot (optional)

Mean Green Juice Recipe

4 stalks of celery
1 cucumber — (peel off skin)
1 ginger root — (thumb size – peel off skin)
1/2 lemon — (skin cut off)
2 green apples
6 kale leaves

You pretty much can’t go wrong with most recipes if you have as your base apple, cucumber and carrot for the majority of your recipe to mask whatever other veggies you might not enjoy to juice on their own.

Juice in juicer and drink throughout the day! You can drink as much of these as you like.

It’s best to drink your juice on an empty stomach, for example, first thing in the morning to jump start your day.

Unfortunately, most people hop out of bed in the morning and grab a coffee – often sweetened and thickened with cream – then look around the kitchen for more sweetness, figuring that’s the energy boost they need to start the day.

That is why I can’t stress enough how keeping your menu to liquids -vegetable and green juices! - in the morning is an excellent way to aid your body’s natural repair cycles. Since our bodies are usually far too acidic, this is a good way to help flush out all the bad things and replace them with the good ones we need.

Drink your juice slowly, “chewing” it in your mouth.

Remember, to be successful at losing weight, you also need a lifestyle change (a healthy diet and continued exercise).

Good luck and have fun!

FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe Cross’ personal mission to regain his health while traveling across America, juicer in tow, and inspiring others to do the same. If you are thinking about doing a “juice reboot,” there’s nothing like it! It’s invigorating, healthy and curbs one’s appetite. Get inspired by reading about Joe and Phil, and watching their documentary.

Reboot Your Life With Juicing

Joe is seriously overweight, his body laden with and suffering from a debilitating auto-immune disease to boot — an auto-immune disease that requires 15 milligrams a day of Prednisone. That dosage guarantees long-term adverse side effects.

With doctors and conventional medicine powerless to offer a real solution, Joe turns to the only option left… The body’s ability to heal itself….

He ditches the junk food lifestyle and takes to the road with his Breville juicer vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days….

The transformation is incredible…

Joe Cross leaves his Australian home and business and goes on a physician-supervised 2-month juice fast. He spends 30 days in New York City, and the second 30 days traveling by road from East to West. Along the way he talks to people everywhere he goes, preaching the virtues of juice fasting for weight loss.

One of the main things that you will see in the documentary is how powerful and effective a juice fast can be to your health. You might think that Joe Cross was a little crazy when he’s only going to drink juice for the entire 60 days. But after seeing the positive results from Joe and a couple of individuals who also tried a similar fast, you may get inspired and motivated to reboot your own life with juicing.

Ok, so the main message of this good-natured documentary is nothing earth-shattering, but Joe’s insistence that self-help is the best help allows him to lay responsibility on ourselves.

If you’re serious about changing your lifestyle – Watch this!

Fat Sick and Nearly Dead

My 2 Cents

Although juicing for weight loss is great, doing a 60 day juice fast isn’t necessarily the easiest or the most healthy way to lose weight for most people, in my opinion. By juicing fruit and veggies you are losing virtually all of the beneficial fibers, unless of course you eat the pulp – or drink green smoothies

What I would recommend instead, is simply to add freshly made vegetable/fruit juices (and smoothies) to your diet. Unless you’re a committed, disciplined type, don’t go cold turkey on juice reboot diet, just ADD the juice. As the days go by, drink more and more of it, until you find yourself eating less and less of everything else.

Next start replacing your “meat and potato” type meals with more fruit, vegetables, as well as some whole grains and beans. Once all that’s accomplished, then try the juice fast.

Taking cold turkey plunge into the juice fast is challenging to say the least, and you might just fold and abandon the fast too quickly, and never return to the wonders of juicing. That’s why it’s better to ease into this gradually.

Also, you need to be aware of the detox effect – with some unpleasant side effects – that will kick in if you go into this too quickly.

Also, buy a really good juicer. If it’s not easy to do the juicing, it will become the excuse to quit. I recommend Breville which you can buy at a really good price at Amazon.com.

Whether you are just starting up with juicing or have been juicing for a while and feel like you are getting it’s nice to keep a few juicing books in your kitchen to keep your motivation high and provide new recipe ideas.

While it may be difficult to recommend just one juicing book to buy – as it’s hard to tell which is the best juicing book for you – here are a few book ideas to choose from. Each of these books is different, and all of them are worth their price to be able to reach for them whenever you want.

Complete Book of Juicing: Your Delicious Guide to Youthful Vitality by Michael T. Murray

This is the first book I purchased when I started juicing, and I still refer to it regularly. It provides wealth of information on the NUTRITIONAL components of fresh juice and its benefits for health. It has a section on the fruits and vegetables with the benefits of juicing each. There is a nice section on recipes(both with nutritional value and caloric content). There is a section on weight loss by juicing and a section which recommends different recipes to juice for different health problems.

Keep in mind that there are no photos or color illustrations in the book, so if you are a visual person you may want to check out the The Big Book of Juices instead.

The Complete Book of Juicing

The Complete Book of Juicing

The Juicing Bible by Pat Crocker

This book is a very comprehensive resource for juicing inspiration. It is much more detailed than your average juicing book. It’s separated into quite a few sections, ranging from simple juices to recipes for using the leftover pulp. Keep in mind that in most recipes she calls for use of spices, herbs, and some quite uncommon ingredients, for example, lavender, powdered licorice, powdered linden flower, borage leaves, acai berries, red raspberry leaves, stinging nettle, kelp, astragalus root, meadowsweet and apricot milk.

So if you are looking for a straight forward book that just offers simple, basic juicing recipes – you may prefer to go with “Complete Guide to Juicing” – as this is not for you; all of the extras will definitely turn you off. But for those of you looking for something that goes beyond your standard carrot-apple combination, this is sure to please. This book really goes above and beyond your typical juicing guide, with options for those that want to add a little more to their juices and really utilize every part of produce used.

It starts off with a mini-encyclopedia listing herbs, fruits and veggies which can be used in your juicing. Offered is a quick summary of each item, how to use it in juicing, and health benefits of each (good for digestion, cooling, antispasmodic, etc.). Then, there’s a section on common health illnesses which lists juices (and other juice-type items, all of which have recipes in the book) that may help the ailments, as well as dietary tips, foods and herbs that may help the disorder, and some lifestyle changes to try.

The rest of the book has the following sections:
1. Fruit Juices
2. Vegetable Juices
3. Cocktails — these are juices with a little something extra, like yogurt, milks, spices, etc.
4. Frozen treats — most of these recipes utilize leftover pulp from juices
5. Roughies — these are actual food recipes, using the juicing pulp from other recipes
6. Smoothies — uses juices and frozen fruit
7. Digestive Aids and Cleansers — the title section speaks for itself
8. Milk substitutes — recipes for nut milks, apricot milk, fig milk, etc.
9. Coffee substitutes
10. Teas and Tonics — these recipes are mostly for medicinal teas which are geared towards alleviating body ailments and/or aiding and encouraging natural bodily functions and processes.

The Big Book of Juices by Natalie Savona

“The Big Book of Juices” is one of the most creative books on juicing. It’s also one of the most beautiful – the pictures of the juices are amazing and you might be intrigued by all the different shaped glasses the author found to display the juices in.

The fruit and vegetable blends are especially delicious. Who would have thought that grapefruit would go so well with carrots and celery. And how about broccoli with pears? Yet these all seem to work well. Also, each recipe is “graded” on 5 areas with 0-5 stars; energy, detox, immunity, digestion and skin.

As a side note: If you’re not a fan of combining fruits and vegetables in the same recipe – as some people aren’t – this is not the book for you — virtually all of these recipes combine the two food groups.

While you need a juicer for most of the recipes, she also provides recipes for your blender. There are also some recipes for teas made with fresh herbs.

The Big Book of Juices

Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life by Cherie Calbom

The book focuses on detoxing your body in order to become healthier. It starts by talking about health, explaining the how’s and why’s of juicing, fasting and detoxing. Then it goes into the specifics of cleansing your colon, liver, gallbladder and kidney. In the final chapters the authors include information on the nutrient content in food, recipes to use while fasting and detoxing, and a nice resource guide.

Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: available both in print and Kindle edition

Breville JE98XL is a great entry-level juicer that will get you into the world of juicing in no time and for affordable price.

Since I tend to be short on both time and patience when it comes to kitchen technology, centrifugal juicers are my favorite. The bottom line for me is this: if it’s not simple to use, efficient, and easy to clean, chances are I won’t ever really use it.

And what’s the point of owning a great juicer if it’s collecting dust in your kitchen cabinet?

There are many great centrifugal juicers out there, with several great Breville juicers in the low to mid price range. This Breville JE98XL Juicer is one of the most popular juicers on the market today.

So the question is how this JE98XL Juicer by Breville compare to other Breville juicers? Is it going to carry the same quality as those with other Breville models and is this going to be at par with other juicer brands in the market?

Breville JE98XL Pros

Some of my favorite things about this juicer include:

Lots of juice: The pulp is still a bit moist, but not soggy as compared with some other machines, so you know you’re not throwing money away. The juice is smooth and very light, not pulpy.

Fast Juicing Performance: The juicer’s dual-speed motor and powerful stainless-steel cutting disc quickly extract the juices from a variety of foods, including soft melon and cucumbers or rind-on pineapple, thick-skinned apples, and carrots. In fact, it can produce 8 ounces of juice from whole apples in just five seconds. You can choose between two speed settings: high speed (12,000 RPMs) for denser fruits and harder vegetables like beets and carrots and low speed (6,500 RPMs) for leafy vegetables and soft fruit, like greens, citrus fruits and melons.

Generous Extra-wide 3-inch feeder chute: I don’t like to spend a lot of time chopping – cucumbers, small apples, beets and other whole veggies easily fit in the feeder tube whole and the dual speed motor gets the job done in seconds. Just place a glass or small pitcher under the spout, insert the desired produce, and gently press down using the included pusher.

Easy clean up! - The attachable parts can easily be taken apart so that you can clean them with your dishwasher. All of the parts are dishwasher safe, and the basket only takes a few minutes to clean by hand (if you choose). The included wire brush makes this very easy.

Low Noise Level – Breville JE98XL is surprisingly quiet when you consider its size.

Beautiful design – It looks great by itself and has a minimalist look that will complement most kitchen counter tops.

Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juicing Machine

Breville JE98XL Cons

It’s really hard to find some serious disadvantages with regards to the Breville JE98XL, but of course, no juicer is perfect. This juicing machine is not that terrific when it comes to juicing leafy greens, such as spinach or wheat grass, or citrus fruits; but this is one weakness that all centrifugal type juicers share. To maximize the juicing performance when juicing greens, roll them up in a ball and push them down the chute with an apple or other juicy fruit.

The bottom line is this: you can spend a ton of money on twin screw juicers and they work great, but the chute is ridiculously small and it’s a pain to push root veggies through. The cleanup takes way too much time for me. Yup, it makes more froth than these slower juicers but it’s fast and easy to clean. Some people criticize these juicers that fast juicing causes too much oxidation – but I just drink my juice right away after I make it so it’s not a big deal for me.

Aloe Vera juice has become very popular as a natural remedy for various conditions.

Most people use aloe simply by cutting off a piece of leaf and squeezing the liquid onto their skin. This works, but it wastes the inner gel, which is the most potent part of the plant. To use the gel, you’ll need to “fillet” the leaves rather than merely squeezing them (see the video at the bottom of the page).

I’ve also seen recipes calling for the use of the whole leaf – including the skin – such as the smoothie recipe below.

Aloe Vera Juice and Smoothie Recipes

Aloe Vera & Orange Juice
2 oranges
1 inch of aloe vera leaf, filleted

Juice two oranges and blend in the aloe vera pulp.

Aloe Vera – Apple – Lemon – Cucumber
1 Cucumber
1 Apple
1 Lemon
2 tbsp aloe vera pulp

1. Blend or juice the apple and the cucumber
2. Add the lemon juice
3. Cut open an aloe vera leaf and scoop out 2 tbsp of the pulp and add it to the mixture, and blend

Aloe Vera Green Smoothie Monster
byVictoria Boutenko

4 leaves kale, stems removed
4 leaves chard, stems removed
½ bunch fresh parsley
1 leaf aloe vera
½ bunch dandelion greens
3 pears
1 banana
3 cups water

Aloe Vera Benefits

Skin Benefits
Aloe vera juice helps improve skin quality and complexion and it’s frequently used as an ingredient in many beauty and skin care products. Aloe has been used for centuries as an aid for cuts and burns. It also helps alleviate the pain of sunburn while speeding healing and can be used as a skin moisturizer.

Digestive Health
Drinking aloe vera juice improves the digestion and is one of the most common reasons people drink it. According to some research, when aloe is applied topically to a wound, it helps speed up the healing process.

Anti-inflammatory Benefits
One study provides evidence that the sterols found in aloe vera have strong anti-inflammtory properties.

// ]]>

The Hamilton Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor is a decent quality inexpensive juicer with some great features that make it a very good juicing companion.

The pros:

Affordable price that saves you money. With the price tag under $75 on Amazon, the Hamilton Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor is a very affordable juicer for people just getting into juicing who don’t want to invest a lot of money in a juicing machine.

Wide feeder tube that saves you time. One of its key features is the big 3-inch wide feeder tube, which helps cut juicing time by allowing you to put in whole produce without the need for cutting them into smaller pieces. If you want a fast juicer where you can just throw the fruits and vegetables in one end of the machine and have juice come out of the other end, this is a good choice. All you need to do is to put whole fruits or veggies into the feeder chute, and gently press down using the pusher.

The Hamilton Beach Juicer juices fast and is very easy to use. What this means is that you would just have an easier time preparing your juices.

With quite powerful yet quiet 1.1-horsepower motor this centrifugal juicer is powerful enough to juice just about anything from pineapple, melon, apples, oranges, and grapes to tomatoes, celery stalks, cucumbers, carrots, beets, spinach, kale, and more. The more powerful the motor, the faster the cutting blades spin and the faster you get your juice. Being a centrifugal juicer means its fast so you can juice produce within a matter of seconds.

Despite its power, the juicer is not that loud, especially when you compare it to a high speed blender.

Extracted juice flows from the spout directly into the big 20-ounce juice cup so if you want to juice a larger amount of fruits and vegetables juice, the larger container is ideal. The pulp gets ejected into the large pulp bin for easy disposal. The parts are dishwasher-safe parts making cleaning up a snap, and a cleaning brush comes included.

It’s quick and easy to assemble.

It’s compact in size, measuring approximately 14-1/2 by 10 by 18 inches.

Nice looking design. The Big Mouth Pro has a nice attractive modern sleek looking design.

It comes with one-year limited warranty, and for juicers in this price range, a 1 year warranty is really good. Plus, Hamilton Beach is one of the leading distributors of small kitchen appliances, selling over 35 million appliances every year, which means you’ll be dealing with an established company with great track record.

Hamilton Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor: Buy it on Amazon

Juice cup, removable pulp bin, and cleaning brush included; dishwasher-safe parts

The Cons

Durability. You will find that the Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor is well made for its price, however, it may not be as durable as more expensive juicers. You can find some reviewers complaining that it broke down after a relatively short period of time. The good thing is it comes with a 1 year warranty, so you can get it fixed or replaced if it breaks down in that period of time.

Efficiency. The juicer may not be the most efficient in getting all the juice from the pulp, especially with soft fruits and vegetables. So, even though it’s inexpensive, it may not be the cheapest to operate in the long run if you factor in the cost of produce, because you waste some of it in the process. With hard fruits and vegetables, this juicer is very efficient, producing fine, slightly moist pulp. However, if you are making juice from soft fruit, you will end up with soft, mushy pulp. So for softer stuff like watermelon and spinach leaves, you may prefer to use a blender instead to make it into a smoothie.

Keep in mind that the problem with efficiency is not a problem with this particular model, but a fault with all centrifugal juicers. A masticulating juicer would produce dryer pulp wasting less produce, but would take a lot longer to operate. It takes more time to make a cup of juice with a masticulating (grinding gears) juicer. A citrus juicer makes citrus juice only.

A perfectionist or very frugal person would probably opt for less wet pulp waste by buying a masticulating juicer such as an Omega 8005. A person with a busy lifestyle would probably prefer a fast juicer that is easy to clean like this one. A person who drinks citrus juice a lot would probably buy a citrus juicer. If you are making wheat grass juice, then buy a wheat grass juicer.

Depending on your needs, you may choose to buy a different juicer. However, for the price, it is a great juicer.
